What makes a good breeding dog?
This is a question from all ages. Some feel it is working ability, looks, health, or price you can get for the puppies. The fact is there are too many things that go into a breeding to narrow it down. But here at our house we feel the first test is if the dog can cut it as our pet. Who wants a dog you can't live with? So intelligence, learning ability, and temperment are key to staying here as a pet. We do not believe a bulldog needs to have the intensity of a working dog, as most bulldogs are not kept as working dogs but as family pets. And trust me a wonderfully socialized pet will protect his family if the need would arise. But if they make the most wonderful pet that does not make them breeding quality. We then need to look at health. If the dog is not functional it makes no sense to breed a dog that will perpetuate a health condition to it's puppies. So that will take out any dog(s) from the breeding program that don't make the cut. Well, I didn't mention look but truthfully if they aren't appealing to look at they won't even start out at our house, why start out with a poor quality dog??? So we won't go there. We are breeding bulldogs, if doesn't look like a bulldog it doesn't belong. But we do like a better structure than the average bulldog. We feel they should have straight legs, a good topline, breed free, and breathe free. The last on the list is color. Some people do not believe in breeding dogs for the color of their fur. But if all other qualities are there we enjoy have a colorful bulldog. And so far we have found a few quality specimen to use that have colorful fur.
